How to get Microsoft Document Imaging on Office 97 (print to TIFF)

Hi there
I know with Office 2003 we can print items to the MDI, and they can come out
as TIF or MDI files - a really awesome feature when you want to print
something digitally rather than on paper.

The thing is, I've just taken over from someone else, and it seems that some
of the machines on this network are running old Office 97 - is there any way
I can set them up so they have a printer option similar to the Microsoft
Office Document Image Writer from Office 2003?

Otherwise, if there's a nice universal program for converting a printout to
a digital format instead, that'd be awesome!

What we want to do is print out documents and e-mail them off as
attachments, rather than have them printed out as paper format. Obviously
we'd like to avoid printing them on paper, then scanning them, and emailing
them. Is there some sort of nice conversion routine similar to the Document
Imaging option in Office 2003?

MS Office Document Imaging Printer relies on parts
of MS Office 2003 but there are 3rd party 'printers'
that can print to graphic file formats such as
