how to get numerical roman characters?

You could use a field, too:
{ = 7 \* roman } would display vii.
Insert the {curly field braces} with Command+F9, toggle between field codes
and result with Option+F9.

Dear [whoever],

From your lack of Shift key I'm assuming you mean "Roman" and not "roman",
which is something different.

You could set up an AutoCorrect entry (Tools menu -> AutoCorrect) that
would
type "i" when you keyed in for example "r1". "ii" for "r2" and so on.

But maybe someone else will come up with something brilliant.

Of course, if you want to have Roman numerals for page numbering instead
of
Arabic, that can be selected; post back if you want to know how.
