There are a lot of reasons why you might not get sound. I'll skip the
part about turning on your speakers, etc., assuming you can get sound for
other things. The most common reason you won't get sound is that the
sound was not included in the PowerPoint. Only certain types of sound and
certain sizes of sound are embedded in a PowerPoint file. All other
sounds are linked. That is, there is an external sound file. That
external sound file must be included with the PowerPoint presentation
and, generally, in the same folder as the PowerPoint presentation. If you
are sent an email with a PowerPoint, try saving the PowerPoint file and
all other files (sounds, videos, etc.) that come with it to the same
folder, and then try to launch it. If there are no other files that came
with the PowerPoint, there is a chance that whoever sent it to you didn't
send the sound files. The sender should check out:
Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or
email a presentation

Finally, if you have the associated files, it is possible that there are
of a type that Mac PowerPoint can't play. Mac PowerPoint can play most of
the same types that Windows can, but, perhaps, there is a type that they
use that you can't play.
This is by no means a complete answer, but it is a start.
