how to get stair-stepped outline numbering

I am using Word 2007 and editing built-in heading paragraph styles. I want
all the headings first line of text start at the same place. I also want the
outline numbers in the related list style to stair step from left to right as
I progress to lower levels as shown below.

1. heading 1 first line text
hanging indent for heading 1 text
1.1 heading 2 first line text
hanging indent for heading 2 text
1.1.1 heading 3 first line text
hanging indent for heading 3 text
1.1.1.1 heading 4 first line text
hanging indent for heading 4 text

I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to get numbers to stair step, the first
line of all the headings to line up at the same spot, and get the hanging
indent to also properly align. I am using a right alignment in the list style
when I define the numbering (modify multilevel list> position> number
alignment= left).

This whole thing is going from bad to worse. I think it’s my process and
sequence. I would really appreciate learning what is the most time-efficient
way to produce the list style and the related paragraph styles so one isn’t
conflicting with the other.

What you need to do, as you modify your numbering in the multilevel list
dialog box, is to specify a common value for "Text indent at" and "Add tab
stop at" (when I experimented I tried 5 cm which is about 2"). Set the
"Aligned at" value to zero for level 1, and then set increasing values for
levels 2 through 9 of your list. (To see all options you may have to click
the More button in the dialog box.)

Stefan:

This worked MUCH better than what I was doing. THANKS for "news you can use."
