how to get the free trial IRM service

As far as I know, IRM is not available as a free download. You need Windows
Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with Rights Management Services installed, and
then you can use the IRM features that are already included with Office 2003.

Are you talking about the free Internet Exporer plug-in?

If yes, then see this page:

Hi Jam,

If you're referring to the IRM trial detailed here
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010721681033.aspx

then in Word 2003 use Help=>Customer Feedback Options
turn on the 'Search online content...' choice under
the 'Online Content' category.

Then choose the 'Protect Document' Taskpane and select
the 'Restrict Permissions' settings and see if you're
offered a signup for a trial IRM installation.
