How to have auto numbering after text

D

David Elliott

I am looking to set up a document that is similar to the format below.
The part that I am interested in is "Section <X>:" and "Test Case <X>.<Y>". I was
wanting it to come after text and be auto formatting as this document will grow over
time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave

You can achieve what you want through Word's numbering. See

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

If you follow the instructions at that page, when you get to the
Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, choose Level 1. Delete
everything in the Number Format box. Type your text (eg "Section "),
then choose from the Number Style box to add the numbering you want (1),
then add the ":" after the number.

In your case, I would suggest using the following styles:

Section 1: [Use Heading 1 with numbering "Section 1: "]
Test Case 1.1 [Use Heading 2 with numbering "Test Case 1.1"]
Description: [Use Heading 3 with numbering "Description: " ]
Steps: [Use Heading 4 with numbering "Steps: "]
1) Do this [Use Heading 5 with numbering "1) "]

The advantages of using the heading styles for what appear to be
non-numbered needs (Description and Steps) are that (a) you will have
all your information in one neat numbering scheme, (b) your Do This, Do
That paragraphs will be numbered appropriately.

For ease of typing, make sure that each style is set up with the
appropriate "Style for the following paragraph".

If you don't want to use the built-in numbered heading styles, you could
use custom styles. But read the following first:
Why use Word's built-in heading styles?

Hope this helps.

And note that one of the Outline Numbered formats in the List Gallery by
default has Article, Section, etc. That might be a good one to start with
(customize) to help you get the hang of it.
