How to hide pictures (and occupied space) in Outline View

I am using Word 2003. When I view my document in Outline Mode, I
would to see only the text content, not the graphics or the space it
occupies. That means I don't want to see an empty box that's as big
as the graphic, since it is just information-less space that scatters
the text content. Is there a way to do this? Having small icons as a
placeholders for graphics would be very welcome, since they prevent me
from accidentally deleting the graphic, but the vast empty boxes are
highly suboptimal.

The graphic displays because it's set to In Line with Text - therefore a
part of the text flow.

The only way I can think of is to use some type of Text Wrapping to the
graphic. Once converted to a floating object it won't display or occupy
space in Normal or Outline views. However, it may also create other problems
with the flow of the text that will have to be compensated for in some way.
