How to I change the default standard calendar to add holidays

How to I change Project Professional 2002's default standard calendar to add
holidays, etc?

I've read in Microsoft's training material (Microsoft Project 2002 Training
Courseware - Lesson 13: Calendars) that "Calendars are saved as part of the
individual project file (.mpp). The default Standard calendar, is contained
in the Global.mpt file and copied to new project files as they are created.
Any changes made to the Standard calendar, or any new calendars created, are
then saved as part of the project file."

However, it doesn't tell me how to get to the Global.mpt file and edit the
standard calendar.

Can you help?

Open a project and click Tools - Change Working Time. You can add your
holidays to the Standard calendar. After you create all of your company
holidays for the next couple of years, click the the OK button to close the
dialog. To copy the modified Standard calendar to the Global.mpt file,
click Tools - Organizer and click the Calendars tab. Copy the Standard
calendar from the list on the right (in the active project) to the list on
the left (in the Global.mpt file). Click the Close button when finished.
Save your project file and then exit Project Professional to save the
Global.mpt file as well. The next time you create a new blank project, your
company holidays will already show up in the project. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale -

I may need to clarify my question:

I am the Admin of our Project Server/Project Professional 2002/Project Web
Access (PWA) installation. I am trying to add all of our company's holidays
to the GLOBAL Standard Calendar when connected to Project Server 2002 so that
all Project Managers already have these days blocked out in their current or
new project plans (if they choose the Standard Calendar).

Were your instructions to that effect? Because in trying to follow them, I
ran into some issues.

The first issue was that when I log into Project Server through Project
Professional 2002, I cannot edit the Standard calendar from the Tools -
Change Working Time option. All three of the "Set selected date(s) to"
options are grayed out. (Use default, Nonworking time, Nondefault working
time)

So, then I tried following your instructions while “working offline†in
Project Professional 2002 (not connecting to the Server). I then saved the
project plan locally. I can see that when I create a new project plan –
again, working offline – the holidays show up. However, I need the holidays
to show up in the Standard calendar when connected to the Server.

Do you know how to add holidays to the Global Standard Calendar when
connected to Project Server 2002?

Thanks!

In Project Professional 2002, click Tools - Enterprise Options - Open
Enterprise Global. Then follow my original directions and you can edit the
Standard calendar to include your company holidays. Save and close the
Enterprise Global file and then exit and relaunch Project Professional 2002.
Hope this helps.

That seemed to be working, until…

From the beginning: In Project Professional 2002, I clicked Tools -
Enterprise Options - Opened Enterprise Global. Clicked Tools - Change Working
Time, and added my company’s holidays as non-working time to the Standard
calendar. Then I clicked the OK button to close the Change Working Time
window.

However, when I tried to copy my checked-out, modified Standard calendar to
the Global.mpt file: [by clicking Tools – Organizer, and Calendars tab and
copying the modified Standard calendar from the list on the right (in the
active project) to the list on the left (in the Global.mpt file).] , I
received an error.

First, after clicking “Copy†from the right to the left, a window popped up
that said “The calendar Standard already exists in “Global (+ cached
Enterprise).†Do you want to replace the calendar Standard in “Global (+
cached Enterprise)†with the calendar Standard from “Checked-out Enterprise
Global†The option buttons are Yes, No, Rename. So, I said yes.

Then, I get an error window saying “Cannot delete or overwrite item. This is
an enterprise global item that can only be deleted or overwritten from a
checked-out enterprise global. You can delete or overwrite items that
originate in your local global.â€

These two messages seem to contradict each other…

Any ideas for how I can overwrite the Global calendar with my check-out
Standard calendar that includes new holidays?

Thanks!

Actually, even though I got the error message, this seemed to work.
I could see the holidays on the Standard calendar when connected to the
Server and another employee could also.

Thanks so much!

You don't need to copy the Standard calendar anywhere. Because it is in the
Enterprise Global file, every user gets this calendar when he/she launches
Project Professional 2002 and logs into Project Server. Hope this helps.
