How to I create a Compliance type of Report?

Leo R

We have just implemented projectserver2003.

Management wanted me to create a report which tells them which project
complies with our SDLC guidelines, that is, have all the important milestones
of SDLC in their project plan. We do have a SDLC template. But we know that
project managers can delete portions of the template in MS Project.

Can anybody give me tips or suggestions ?

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi leo,

The problem you have is more process orientated then software. You are right
PM's have the abillity to delete Milestones, but if they know that the
process doesnt allow them to do so, then they should be able to follow this
process.

There are a couple of reports you can create which allow you certain
governance. Something like a PMO could create a Task Milestone report within
PWA which allows them to check if all Milestones are still present in a
Project.

Further to this you can use reporting services to create your own customised
compliance reports based on rules which you will need to define with the
business.
Reporting Service allows you the automatically send out the report once a
day or week and would be able to display projects that did not comply with
your rules that you have defined.

But at the end of the day, you will need to implment a process and govern
this with people. A software tool like Project Server can assist you but the
actual governance will need to come from you.

I hope this helps

Hi Marc,

Thank you very much Marc. What you said helps a lot. It confirmed what
people had been telling me. I know the process is more important than the
software. We still need the report which we can show to Management who is
complying and who is not. With such a report, project managers will know they
have to follow the process.

Just have a few of questions based on what you said:
1. Is PMO a software or refers to a Project Management Office?
2. Is Reporting services a software or one of the services in Project Server?
3. If PMO and Reporting Services are softwares, where can we get them?

Once again, thank you very much.

Hi Leo,

Since Marc has not yet replied, Reporting Services is Microsoft SQL Server
Reporting Services. It comes with the Enterprise and Developer editions of
MS SQL Server. I believe it also comes with the Standard version. More
info avail at the URL below:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/default.mspx

I expect that by PMO Marc was referring to a Program/Project Management
Office.

Hi Crook,

Thank you for the info. I found out we still have to install the Report
Services if we wanted to use it.
