How to I get corner point control on the end point of a free form

I am using Word 2003
I use the draw feature within Word very extesively
I am trying to control the shape of a Freeform Line. I select the line and
select Edit Points. I select the end point and select Corner Point, but I do
not get the blue line handle.

Any suggestions on how to make this happen?

There should be two tiny boxes when you invoke the corner point, if you select a
box and drag you will see the blue line handle. I hope this is what you mean.

I just drew a test line and it worked, but the original line will not
display the small box and the blue line on the end points. It works on the
points in the middle but not always on the ends. I drew another line and got
the handle on one end but not the other. I guess I just have to draw line
until I get one that works.
