How to I make a document fit

Hi Everyone,
I am new to Microsoft office 07 student. I used to use Word perfect a lot.
I have taken courses years ago in Office but now I am lost.
I type a letter and when I print it if it does not fit the page it looks
awful.
Is there a way to make my letter or document fit in one page.?
