How to I prevent onenote sections from disappearing?

The sections in one of my folders suddenly disappeared. The backup is
present. When I tried to restore it, I got an error message that states the
file name is already present. Any ideas on why this is happening?

If you go to File | Open | Section do you see them listed?

You probably just closed the file. It is possible to close a file in
OneNote and they won't show up in the program but the file is still there
on your hard drive.
