How to import labels from a text file

G

GeorgeK

Hello,
I'm having a problem importing labels from a text file. The file is not csv
or tab separated values. It's a plain list with names and addresses, but the
only logic relation between records is that they start every "9" lines. I'm
trying to import this file to word to generate labels but so far I haven't
figured out how to do it.
Some records have 3 lines and some have 4, depending on the address, but the
1st line of all records are systematically 9 lines away, as the example above:

Name 1
Address 1-a
Address 1-b
Address 1-c or nothing
blank (line4)
blank (line5)
blank (line6)
blank (line7)
blank (line8)
Name 2
Address 2-a
etc....

I could do a copy/paste, but we are talking about 3000 labels :-(
Does anybody know some way around a problem like this? I'll really
appreciate your help.

Regards,
Jorge

Terrific!!
Thank you so much Graham!!

Actually I couldn't finish it yet because for some reason my document is not
accepting to search for the ^13 code. It works find when I search for ^13, or
^13{1}, but if I search for ^13{2} or ^13{2,5} it says "Word has finished
searching the document" but nothing is found :-(

What I noticed is that the character, even though is found with ^13 one by
one, is not displayed by Word in the same way. It shows the same character on
the document but with the circle left side empty, not filled in black as when
I typed "ENTER" in a standard document.

Anyway I'm working around it searching the web for info. I want to than you
so much for your help!!!
Have a great day!

You shouldn't need to strip out the blank lines before converting to a
table. Just create a table with the extra columns to accommodate the empty
lines then delete the extra ones later. If I understand you correctly the
'circle' is a non breaking space. If you have spaces in the empty lines,
then your search for other than ^13{1} cannot work as you have not allowed
for the spaces.
