How To Include Name in "Reply-To" Header

B

Barry Skidmore

I have been told by a client that their outgoing email from Outlook 2003
is being rejected by some ISP's because their "Reply-To" header contains
only their email address, rather than their name + email address; for
example, Reply-To: <[email protected]> versus Reply-To:
"Somebody" <[email protected]>.

Although I have not heard of such filtering, I have attempted to enter a
name + email address in Outlook's "Reply Email:" field within the
"Internet Email Setting" options without success. I have tried about a
dozen variations of the general "Somebody" <[email protected]>
format, and then looked at the headers of the received emails using a
text-based client (mutt) that enables me to see all the headers.

The results are as follows:

When I include only the email address in the "Reply Email:" field, the
"Reply-To" header of the received email is in the format of
<[email protected]>, as expected. However, all my attempts to
include the user's name in front of the email address result in the
"Reply-To" header being dropped entirely from the received email (i.e.,
there is no Reply-To header at all).

Any ideas about how to accomplish the above?

Thanks,
Barry

Name field: Put the user's name here. It is the comment field added to
the addresses.

E-mail field: The user's claimed e-mail address. Gets put in the From:
header.

Reply-To field: Where the user *requests* for replies to be returned.
If non-blank, it should be different than the E-mail field's value.

More likely is that the user is trying to send e-mails where they want
replies sent elsewhere, and perhaps their e-mail provider doesn't permit
that. So leave the Reply-To field blank and have the user just specify
their correct e-mail address in the E-mail field (for the From: header).
