how to increase word memory

MS word 2003 repeatedly exhibting them nessage, " word has inssufficient
memory, one document is opened it may not be possible to close the document"?
Please advise how to icrease the memory of the word. My PC configurations:

processor 2.4 Gh HT, 256 RAM, HDD 40 GB, window xp with service pack 2,

256MB is barely enough to run XP let alone XP + Office2k3. You might need to
buy more RAM.
