I have modified the paragraph indent of some of the inbuilt Word table
styles which show up on the styles pane with the indent in place. When I try
to apply the style to a table in the document nothing happens.
If I add an indent to the underlying paragraph style where the table is
positioned then it doesn't indent the table only the text inside each cell.
The only way I have found is to drag the table borders to be in the correct
position, but this means each table has to be individually hand crafted.
Is there an easier way?les pane with the indent in place. When I try to

The following works in Word 2003, but I don't have Word 2002 handy to see
whether it works there -- you'll have to try it yourself.

Open the Style dialog, select the Table Grid style (or any other table style
that you've already applied to your tables), and click the Modify button. In
the Modify dialog, check the "Add to template" option, then click the Format
button at the bottom and choose Table Properties. In the Properties dialog,
set the "Indent from left" box to 0.08 (this is the default offset from the
table's left border to the cell's text; to check this, click the Options
button in the Properties dialog and look at the "Default cell margins"
settings). Finally, OK all the dialogs.

Word's default is designed to align the text in the leftmost column with the
surrounding text, and allow the border to stick out into the margin by the
amount of the "Default cell margins" setting. With your changes, if you turn
off the printable borders of the table, your leftmost column will now be
indented from the surrounding text. If that's a situation you ever run into,
define a new table style without the left indent.
