How to insert multiple pictures into a textbox with captions?

Q

q0987

Hello all,

I need to insert more than one picture on one page of MS word 2003 document.

Here is what I did
1> Create a blank Word document
2> Insert a textbox
3> Select the inside of the created textbox and insert a picture
4> Insert->Reference->Caption->Figure
MS Word2003 will add Figure 1 as the caption automatically for me
5> Select the line below the caption Figure 1 of the first picture
6> Insert another picture
7> Insert->Reference->Caption->Figure
MS Word2003 will add Figure 2 for me

The problem is that the original caption Figure 1 will be changed to Figure
2 too. In other words, both pictures have the caption read as Figure 2....

Is there a way that I can insert multiple pictures into a textbox and insert
multiple captions that can later be used for cross-reference?

Thank you
-Daniel

Which Word version?
In Word 2003, I also find that all captions in the same text box show the
same number. If you create a text box per picture and caption, the numbers
will be sequential.

Do you insert the pictures in a text box in order to be able to wrap text
around them? In that case, use a frame instead (can be inserted via the Frame
button on the Forms toolbar in case of Word 2003 or earlier). You can convert
an existing text box to a frame: double-click the edge of the text box. In
the “Format Text Box†dialog box, select the “Text Box†tab and click the
“Convert to Frame†button. You must update the fields in the frame after the
conversion (Ctrl+A, F9).

If you do not need to wrap text around the picture, you can insert the
pictures and captions directly in the text layer of the document (use
wrapping style “in line with text†for the pictures).

Hello Lene,

First, thank you for your comments.

I am using MS Word 2003 to edit my document.

The reason why I use textbox and then insert a picture is that I need to
combine the caption with the picture rather than separate them.

I learned from other places that this is a good method to insert a picture
inside a textbox.

Also, if I use multiple textboxes on one page, the format task later will be
very hard, because those textboxes will float here and there even if I use
the layout settings.

Thank you

If you skip the text boxes, insert the pictures with wrapping style “In line
with text†and insert the caption in a paragraph above or below the picture
as you wish, the two will _not_ split (turn on Format > Paragraph > Line and
Page Breaks tab > “Keep with next†for the topmost of the two paragraphs and
they will always be kept together on the same page). The two paragraphs act
as normal text and retain their order in the document.

If you e.g. want to place two pictures besides one another, you can create a
borderless table and insert picture + caption in each table cell.

Or use a frame as mentioned in my first post.
