how to install office xp over office 97

This might be a repeat question, 'cause I can't find the question I thought I
posted yesterday.
I have an old Thinkpad 600 that originally came with Windows 98 and Office
97. Any way, I can't copy Word files from my desktop to the laptop, because
the PC uses Office XP Pro and the laptop Word program won't open the newer
files.
I have an upgrade version of Office XP Pro and would like to upgrade the
laptop, but it won't let me. Is this a problem with "qualifying products" or
am I doing something wrong?

Call MS at 800-936-4900 and explain to them that you have an upgrade cd for
Office Xp and you would like to upgrade from 97 but it doesn't detect 97 as a
qualified product. They should be able to help you get it installed even
though you are having "qualifying product" issue.

Yesterday you said you had Office 95. Office 95 is not a qualifying
product for upgrade to Office XP.
