How to Install Project 2003 SRV with MSDE(without SQL)

I want to install Project Server 2003 for a small workgroup using a Single
computer installation. There is an MS Online book that describes single
server installation with SQL but it leaves out how to do it without SQL
server using MSDE.

I have installed Windows 2003 srv, and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS),
and want to start the Project 2003 server part, but get hung up on the "Enter
acount database information" where you enter 2 account usernames and
passwords that demand that each account be part of the MSProjectRole in SQL
server.

I do not have SQL server and hope to use WSS which has the MSDE component.
How do you get Project 2003 Server running with MSDE instead of using SQL
2000 server?

Any advice or reference to DOC would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

MSDE is basically SQL server for the desktop. When you install MSDE in installs the SQL Enterprise Manager which allows you to setup user accounts and roles, view databases, tables, etc.... Have you installed MSDE yet? If so you should be able to see the Enterprise Manager and start/stop the SQL server service on the local machine.

If you've got it installed I would spend a few minutes (hours) learning how to start and stop the various services of MSDE and get familiar with the configuration as it's installed on your machine. You should know what the MSDE server name is, make sure you can see if it's running and know what users, roles and databases are on your instance. All of this should help get you ready for the project server installation.

The bottom line - installation with MSDE acts identically to installation with SQL server.

I wonder if you are answering one question (use of MSDE 2.0 instead of SQL
Server) and the questioner was asking another "hope to use WSS which has the
MSDE component."

If he's installed WSS with the "MSDE component", what he's got is the
special version of MSDE that comes with WSS i.e. WMSDE.

What I wonder is whether he can use that particular version of MSDE with
Project Server 2003. Certainly the option isn't mentioned as far as I can
see in the MS Project Server 2003 single server installation guide and WMSDE
will only install on the same server as WSS.

Good point Juhani. Didn't think about that.

Sorry Bob, if my reply was unresponsive. Let us know.

Thank you both for your help.

On Thursday (feb 24) I attended a MS Technet session in Halifax Nova Scotia.
They had a "Ask The Expert" desk staffed by MS MVP's that were helpful as
they could be but they were not sure how to install how to Install Project
2003 using MSDE versus using SQL but promised to enquire with other staff and
would get back to me.
The MS online book "Project Server 2003 Single Computer Installation Guide
only explains how to install Project Server with SQL.

I'll post any findings as soon as I receive any more info.

Thanks for you help,

Bob

I'm going to attempt to use SQL Server 2000 and start over with SQL 2000

No luck with MSDE and the OSQL utility
