How to keep a custom style?

N

Netguy

Whenever I create a custom style, it is lost in any new document and I have
to create it all over again, which is getting annoying. The only way to
keep a custom style I create is to open a document, delete everything, and
save as something else.

Is there some way of keeping the custom styles you create in a new document?

Thanks,
Netguy

Have you been checking the "Add to template" box? Assuming that the template
is Normal.dot, have you been prompted to save Normal.dot when you quit Word?
Have you been saying yes?

Open a document that contains your custom style, modify it and mark
the option "Add to template". This will add the style to your
Normal.dot and the style will be available to any new document based
on your Normal.dot

No, and I haven't been prompted. I'm basing the style on "character" vs.
"paragraph" if that means anything. I did find what you're talking about in
"Organizer" though, so I think I got it. :)

I'm using Word 2000 on Windows 98SE, BTW.

Thank you both for the answers.

To make a custom(ized) style available in new documents based on a given
template, you must save the style to the template; otherwise it's available
only in the document in which you have created/modified it. If this template
is Normal.dot and you're not prompted to save Normal.dot even though you've
checked the "Add to template" box in Format | Style | Modify, this indicates
that you don't have "Prompt to save Normal template" checked on the Save tab
of Tools | Options. We advise that you do check it; see
