How to keep Word 2004 the default for .doc?

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I have both Word 2004 and Word 2008 installed on my computer. I want to have Word 2004 to be the default application to open .doc files (Word files) how do I do that?

I have already done a "Get Info" on a .doc file and do the "Open with application" and "Change All" selection but .doc keeps opening up in Word 2008.

As you've found, the conventional fix doesn't do the trick but I'm afraid
there isn't much more that can be done:) I believe that OS X picks either
the most recent version or the most recently installed version when you
double-click a file icon. There may be a way to control it through a
Terminal hack or possibly with AppleScript, but the only workaround I can
offer is to make sure 2004 (and *only* 2004) is running before you open any
files. Perhaps someone else has another idea.

That appears to be another bug. You can't do it.

It always reverts to the Word 12.

While you can't fix this bug. There is a way around it though it
involves another step.

click to high light the file then go to finder file menu and click on
open with. word 12.0 will be the default but if you wait for it to build
the list, you'll see word 11.x highlight that.

or right click and hold for context menu to come up (two button mouse)
and you see the same *open with ...* in the contextual menu chose the
same as above.

Yep that works also. :)

There's an easier way than that. Just drag the file onto the Word 2004 icon
in the dock.
