How to kill remnants of old sites in EditSite

I'm running Project 2003 server. Over time, I created several extra
sites on our server using EditSite. For various reasons, we decided to
un-install and re-install Project Server, WSS, and IIS on the server
to get a clean start. (The Project data is on a separate SQL box.)

After reinstalling IIS, WSS, and Project Server, everything seems to
work OK. I wanted to use EditSite again to recreate an additional site
for a test database (that's moved) and I noticed that several of my
_old_ sites were still listed in EditSite.

If I try to Delete them in EditSite, I get a message saying

"<Virtual Directory Name>: Error encountered finding website number of
virtual site. Site deletion aborted." (OK)

So... it's trying to clean up a virtual directory that doesn't exist
anymore and it's bombing. OK. So how can I get rid of this old crud
that's still on my server and prevents me from deleting/recreating
these sites in EditSite?

I found references to these sites in the Registry under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\MS Project\WebClient
Server\<VirtualDirectoryName>. Is it safe to just blow those registry
keys away? I've got my finger on the button....

Much thanks in advance.

Jack:

The EditSite tool is reading the information from the registry, which is
clearly leftover because you didn't delete the sites using EditSite prior to
reinstalling IIS, which would have removed these entries. You should be OK
to pull the trigger, provided there aren't other unexpected leftovers to
contend with.

I deleted the old registry keys this morning and all went well. I was
able to recreate a secondary site as needed. Thanks very much for the
sanity check.

Have a good one!
