How to let Excel not to save the tmp files in the same folder?

As title, is that possible to set the Excel not to save the tmp files in the
same folder?

What version of excel are you using?

What is the name of one of these tmp files--include the extension.

Maybe it's not excel creating them--it could be your antivirus software.

Hi Dave,
We are using the Ms Office 2003. The name of the tmp file is
"~WRD0002.tmp" with the same size of the original.
Actually, I removed the "Creator Owner" permission on that
folder. So,
the user could only create and write the files, but could not delete the
files. ?it seems that the users should have "delete" permission once any
files are being saved. So, my question is how excel could skip to save the
tmp files and delete the files in the folder.
On the other hand, I have tested this scenario on a PC without
any AV Software.

xl2003 doesn't use .tmp files in the same folder. It does create .tmp files in
your windows temp folder. They shouldn't appear in the same folder as the
original file.

Some background...

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension) in the same folder.

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

These files don't have any extension (no .tmp) and I've never seen one start
with a ~ or look close to significant names (~WRD0002.tmp).

I'd try disabling the AV software and doing some testing.

You may want to share the name of the AV software you're using. Maybe someone
will recognize the problem.

I searched for wrd and .tmp in google and there is lots of info about MSWord
temp files. You sure the file isn't coming from MSWord.

Right. If the user doesn't have the correct permissions, excel will leave that
funny named file--which is probably a very good thing. I'd rather recover my 3
hours worth of changes from that file than lose them!
