If you really mean an index rather than a table of contents, Word does not
hyperlink index entries. You could set this up manually by inserting a
bookmark at the location to which you want to be taken, converting the index
into hard text (Ctrl+Shift+F9), and inserting a hyperlink to that bookmark
in the "index". Depending on how long your index is, this could be a very
laborious process. The biggest problem is that an index often refers to
multiple locations in a document, and a given bookmark can occur only once.
Hence, for index entries with multiple references in the document, you would
have to pick one of them or include a separate bookmark for each location
you want hyperlinked.

On the other hand, if you really mean a table of contents, then Suzanne's
advice will tell you what you need to know.

It would appear a TOC is what he wanted since he sent me an email thanking
me for the link.

To tell the truth I probably made an unwarranted assumption, but so many
users do refer to a TOC as an index that I really didn't even notice the
terminology since he said he wanted it at the beginning of the document and
the functionality he was describing was that of a TOC (and it wasn't clear
to me that he had anything on his "index page" yet).

Actually, he didn't say "at the beginning"... I think you inferred that, as
well. :)

If he responds, perhaps we'll discover whether this is what he wanted. I
suspect you're right, but it's hard to tell. Perhaps we'll find out what he
means by "category," as well.

I guess I really was reading between the lines. Correctly, as it turned out.
