How to link a pdf document to a webpage for down load ?

C

Chareen

I have made a website in Publisher 2007 and am fairly new to web design.

I have an Adobe document I want to add for download/print. I have put an
icon on a page and now want to link to it so that when you click on the pdf
icon it opens the pdf format form to print.

I tried saving the document in the local file for the website, then using
the add hyperlink to local file or folder but when i open my web page in
explorer and click on the icon nothing happens. When I hover over the icon it
shows there is a hyperlink

Frustrated new to web design.

This is how I provide downloadable pdf files from my site.

First I create a folder in the same location where the site files are on the
server for files that going to be made for downloads. (Rather than just
dump them in with the site files).

Then upload the pdf file/s into the folder. I name my folder downloads.

Now go to the link icon and click on it and then select Insert, Hyperlink.

Create the link path as /downloads/file.pdf

file.pdf is your pdf file; change file to your actual file name.

Save as a webpage and upload the site files and you're done.

Thanks Don

Tried that and when I try to use the link it tells me the file is not there
!

Hi Mike

I used ftp to save it to my server and made a seperate file for downloads.
In the file i saved a copy of the document.

When I am signed in in ftp and double click on the document it opens in pdf
reader.

Went back to my site and added a hyperlink and when I test it it tells me
sorry this page does not exist.

Don's steps are the way it works.
If you could not find the file then you have got some step wrong.
Is the hyperlink absolutely correct?
Is the file really where you think it is?
Do you have spaces or uppercase in you filename or path?

At some time we have all got this wrong ( and cursed for ages trying to
find the error.) but it works once you are meticulous about the various
steps.

Check to see if you capitals or spaces? File names in the link need to be
exactly the same. Also, the link icon can not be part of another image or
infringing on another image or text box..

From what you say it is uploaded correctly but your post implies you do
not understand the difference between a FILE and a FOLDER.
So your problem is most likely in the structure of your hyperlink.

You cannot save a copy of your document in a FILE it must be a Folder.

If this is a typo then sorry.

C

it worked !

1) I simplified the file names

2) I learned that I must NOT put in the file extension (ie .pdf or .doc)
into the hyperlink.

Thanks so much for all your help Don, Mike and John it is much appreciated.

I have been fighting with it for a week now.

BUT

Success is mine now, due to your words of wisdom.

Hi John

It was a typo.

From my experience what you say about file extensions is NOT true.
All mine that work have the extension included in the hyperlink and I
cannot see how it could be true because the extension is an integral
part of any file name.
What would happen if you had 2 files in the one directory with the same
name but different extensions?

I just tried without the extension and if there is only one file with
the name then it will be opened but if there are 2 with same name and
different extensions then only one of them will be accesable because the
browser will decide which one of the two gets precedence.

So even though it may have worked for you it is bad practice and
certainly was not related to you finding your file.

Had same problem last week with a pdf type file and I thought the only
solution was to hyperlink to the site i.e.
www.mysite.com/folder/filename.pdf which to me seems to be the long way
around. I tried before to just link to the file i.e. /folder/filename.pdf
but I could not get it to work. So I think you are saying you were
successful without the www type link??

I've always been successful with /folder/filename.pdf except when I forgot
to put in the forward slash before the folder. The reason for forgetting is
I'm working with an old brain. <G> And, with another site, it's a Cold
Fusion site the forward slash isn't used in front of the folder. (???)

No, I never mentioned the www, or front part of the link, I was only
talking about the extension of the file name ie .pdf.
If the file and folder are on the same site as the page containing the
hyperlink then it will be found but if the hyperlink is on another site
then of course the www part is required to find the site where the file
actually is.

J

John G

No, if the file name is unique then the extension is not required but if
there are two files with the same name and different extesions then the
extension is required to get the desired file.

If there is no extension the browser will not know how to deal with the file
so you will be prompted to Find a program to open it, or prompted to Save
the file. So, yah it will sorta work but unless your viewer knows what to do
in this situation.....

The bit I was replying to was to do with leaving the .ext off the
hyperlink, and not having a file on the web site without an extension.
The browser used the .ext of the file to decide how to open it but if
there was no e.ext in the hyperlink then the browser would work on the
first one it found if the name part was the same.
I agree it is bad practice and I was just trying to convince the OP that
leaving to .ext out of the hyperlink was not a solution to the original
problem
