How to link custom task fields to custom resource fields

Hi Guys,

We have a problem where we manage around 30 independant projects thru
our shop and we insert all the individual timing plans into a master
file. In the master file if you view the resource usage chart it
lists all the resources and tasks as expected. Problem is, you may
have 5 tasks that have the same description, say "Fabricate Frame".
Our thinking was to create a custom text field in the task area that
held a project name, "Job1". So back to the resource report. I want
to insert a column that will display the project name (Job1) next to
the task so people know what they are working on. But in the resource
area you can't insert the project name because it is a task field and
not a resource field.

Is there a way to:
resource_custom_text1 = Task_custom_text1

Thanks in advance!!

Steve,
It is even simpler than you thought. In the Resource Usage view just add
the field "Project". It will display the project file name.

In the Resource Usage view, right-click on any column, such as the Resource
Name column, and select "Insert Column" from the shortcut menu. Select the
Project field, set the Align Title and Align Data values to Left, and then
click the Ok button. Now you can see the project for each assignment
without having to go to a lot of work. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,
Thanks for the info. That was helpful but didn't really address the
problem. As I mentioned, these are custom fields not built in fields
like project field. Looks like I used a bad example. Here is a bit
more info on the application. We build concept vehicles that all have
molded door panels that need to be tooled. So I have multiple task to
"prep tool". I added custom text fields in the task area that provide
additional information such as: text1 is Project_ID, text2 is area
(interior or exterior of vehicle), text3 is subassy (doorpanel). Now
that all that info is in there, I want to use it in the resouce
section to indicate:

Composite tech 1, Project_ID, area, subassy, prep tool, date and hours
allocated.

Thanks for your help!!

Sorry if I misunderstood your question. Because of the database structure
of a Microsoft Project plan, you cannot display Task information in a
Resource view, such as the Resource Usage view. I think you have already
found this to be true. In the Resource Usage view, you can see complete
Resource information along with Assignment information, but you are not
seeing actual Task information. In the Task Usage view, you can see
complete Task information along with Assignment information, but you are not
seeing actual Resource information. Perhaps some of the others will have a
trick or two to get around this issue for your situation. Hope this helps.
