How to locate foreign character keys

I know how to switch keyboard sets among foreign langages but this
information is USELESS unless i have an image or overlay so that I know which
characters are produced by hitting which keys! i have tried searching every
way I can think of in HELP but clearly i have not guessed the one vital code
word that will elicit this information. Where in Help can I find a picture /
map / chart / list that says, for example, if i am using the French language
keyboard, where I can find accented characters?????

I had the same problem when trying to learn where the keys were on the
French, Polish and Russian keyboards for classes I took. The only solution
any of us were able to come up with was to search (google worked great) for
places that sell French, Polish, and Russian keyboards. Most of them had
pictures (photos) of the key layout on the keyboards. By studying these and
doing a little trial-and-error we ended up making our own keymaps on paper.

As far as I know, there is no easy digital solution, but if someone can
prove me wrong, I would be rather grateful for that info. The layouts made
for those classes are long gone and I have a friend about to go through the
same series - I'd love to save them the effort.

(BTW, I think the post might be a bit OT here, you might have better luck on
a hardware forum).

There is another (obvious?) but annoyingly time consuming partial solution,
and that is to switch to the foreign character keyboard format a d type every
key insuccession, then go back to English and type the corredponding key - I
did this in a Word table to get the complete French keyboard - but that is
not a very useful solution. There used to be clear plastic overlays in the
distant past. Thanks anyway!!!!
