Dear All,

In Ms Project 2002 we can define resources in resource sheet. To carry
out work we assign resources but how one should maintain stock of
particular material in resource sheet for any project.
Is it possible to maintain stock of all material used in a particular
peoject.?
or is it possible to define material with their stock in resource
sheet?

Thanks in advance for helping me in this matter.

Material resources are used in Microsoft Project to track the consumption of
your supplies, but there is no way to track the beginning inventory or
remaining inventory of a supply.

I remember at the Project 2000 launch a few years ago that someone in the
audience asked a question like you just asked. The person who did the
software demo answered this way, "Microsoft Project is project management
software, not inventory management software. If you need inventory
management software, you should purchase additional software for that
specific purpose." Of course, that drew a laugh from the audience, who
would like to see the software maintain our inventory of supplies, in
addition to allowing us to manage our projects! HA! Hope this little
vignette helps.

Hi Dale,

I happen to think the lack of inventory capability of Project is a pity, and
I have my reply to the "inventory keeping" oneliner.

"Project should not worry about work by human resources. It is a project
management tool, not a human resources management tool"

As you see, anything can be proven by one-liners.

I agree. The lack of inventory keeping in Project has been a disappointment
to many. Wouldn't it be nice to put in a "starting inventory" for each
supply to be used in the project, then to enter actual consumption of each
supply as the project progresses, and then get an e-mail message notifying
us that we need to reorder the supply? That would be cool, wouldn't it?

I get a kick out of your reply to the oneliner. Yes, anything can be proved
by a oneliner. Kudos to you!

Hi Dale and Jan,

Even i agree to that for every project to be maintain in Ms Project we
should be able to update stock for each material required.
And e-mail to notify the reorder the supply will be again new feature
in MS Project.
Ms Project will be good for tracking as well as inventory management.
If anything new in this matter please update me.
Thanks.
