How to make a cell show average of the last 5 entries in a column?

I need to make a fixed cell display the average of the last 5 entires in a
column that will periodically have another entry added to it and may at some
point contain 50 or so entries.

One way
Assuming continuous numeric data running in A1 down
In B1: =AVERAGE(OFFSET(INDIRECT("A"&COUNT(A:A)),,,-5))
will return the average of the last* 5 numbers in col A
*bottommost
