Use Insert> Symbol. You'll find checks in Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Symbol, &
(normal text) all of which should be safe to use.
You have to be selective about what font you use for documents that have to
pass from one OS to another, especially where special characters are
concerned. The same fonts often are not available on both Windows & Mac
systems so font substitution occurs. Most Windows users don't have Zapf
Dingbats. The substituted font may very well not contain the same special
character so it will be displayed & printed as whatever character has the
same encoding assigned to it, as a hollow square or as nothing at all. Stay
with the MS fonts & you should be OK since they're supplied with Office for
both Mac & PC.
As a further suggestion, if the document doesn't have to be edited by the
recipient send a PDF instead of a Word document. That will insure that the
user not only will be able to view it but will see it as you intended. Even
if they do need a working Word doc send a PDF as well. That way the
recipient can compare the 2 & see where any discrepancies occur.
