How to make columns

How do I make two columns on one page? I am using Word
version 6.0. I want to make two columns so when in either
column when I hit return it stays with in that column and
doesn't return all the way back to the other column and
throw off the alignment of everything. Hope I described
this clearly.

Insert a column break (Ctrl+Shift+Enter) between the columns (or use a
table).
