how to make the Microsoft Office recognize a new location of MSOCa

U

Urizen

I am with very little free space in the partition of the hard disk which owns
the operating system Windows XP. I moved the Microsoft Office Setup files
located in the MSOCache folder to another partition so that I could have some
more free space. What else should I do so that Microsoft Office knows that
the files are now located at another partition and not at the partition in
which it is installed?

Thank you very much in advance for all the attention given.

If you are using Office 2003, here is a Knowledge Base article that explains
MSOCache:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825933/en-us

MSOCache should not be moved manually as you did. If possible, move the
MSOCache back to the partition where it was. Then download the Microsoft
tool to move MSOCache to where you want it. Your can download the tool from
here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A3-695B-42C3-9045-B812BA0FED3E&displaylang=en

Using the tool will modifiy registry so that MSOCache can be found in its
new location.

You should have moved them using the Local Installation Source Tool
(LISTool) found here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011402361033.aspx

If you manually move it, the installation source isn't automatically
updated. You might try moving MSOCache back and then using the LISTool. If
that doesn't work then you may need to purge the Office installation entries
in the Registry and reinstall. Should this occur let us know and we can
provide another utility designed for this purpose.

Hi Urizen,

If you're using Office 2007, the \MSOCache folder is set to be on the same drive that the MS Office products are installed to. You
can customize the installation location for Office Suites and for separate Office standalone apps. The Local Installation Source
(LIS) tool mentioned previously works only with Office 2003 series products.

Hello Don,

Thank you very much for your helpful reply. In fact I had already cleaned
Office Setup Files from the Hard Disk Clean Up Utility and so it didn't work
to relocate the MSOCache folder again to it original location. So then, I
also had to perform Enable LIS. Now I already have all the Office Setup files
properly located at another partition. Did I do it right?

Thank you very much for all your support.

Hi Bob,

Thank you very much for your reply. The Office version that I am using is,
in fact, Office 2003. So the previous hints solved my problem.

Thank you to aware me of the differences between Office 2003 and Office 2007.

A way to determine if the new location is recognized is to use Add/Remove
for the Office installation and make a modification.. If you encounter an
error then you know if you need to take additional steps.

Hi Beth Melton,

Unfortunatelly the new location of the MSOCache folder is not recognized by
Microsoft Office Setup. What further steps should I take so that Microsoft
Office Setup can be aware of the new location of the folder under question?

Thank you very much for all your helpful replies.

Hi Beth!

Please can you tell me the link of the utility designed for the purpose of
purging the Office installation entries in the Registry and create new
correct ones as the operation of moving back the MSOCache folder using the
LISTool didn't work properly?

Thank you very much for your support, Beth.

Hi Beth!

I guess that it is not that utility the one I need. That utility is for
removing and cleaning files. What I need is one that you have referred in
your first reply to change the way in which the MSOCache folder is associated
to Office 2003 Setup files so that they can recognize it has being located at
another partition than the one in which it was placed by default.

For the sake of simplicity, I will quote your words:
"If you manually move it, the installation source isn't automatically
updated. You might try moving MSOCache back and then using the LISTool. If
that doesn't work then you may need to purge the Office installation entries

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you want to remove the Registry entries for your Office installation and
reinstall Office in order to correct your Office installation then what I
was referring to in my previous reply is the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Per the KB article:

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not perform the following
functions: (You may have missed *not* when viewing the article previously.
:) )

- Remove Windows Installer

- Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer, such
as Microsoft Office 2003

Hi Rui,

The MS Office 2003 Local Installation Source Tool (LISTool) is the one that can move the location of the \MSOCache folder (it won't
work with the Office 2007 \MSOCache). Some of the methods to use it are listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825933/?FR=1

If the LISTool isn't working for you (are you getting a specific error message, if so, what) then the MS Installer Cleanup tool that
Beth mentioned, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/?FR=1
would let you clear the registry of the current installation to then restart the PC and reinstall it. Do you have more than one
Office 2003 product installed? If not, then you can delete the \MSOCache folder prior to a reinstallation, or you can copy the
installation CD to your hard drive and install from there and, if you choose, for Office 2003, but not Office 2007, delete the
\MSOCache folder.

Note that if you're using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility and it lists 'Office Setup files', choosing that option can take out part
or all of the \MSOCache content.

Hi Beth!

Thank you for your reply. You are right! I have misunderstood the meaning of
the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but before I use it tell one thing.
After I clear Windows Regitry entries will I need to reinstall Microsoft
Office 2003 again or would a Repair be sufficient?

Other question... when I perform the operation Enable of Microsoft Offfice
products using the LISTool Utility, shouldn't them become available for local
use? Why do why always can do enable even after an enable operation has been
performed successfull? I am just not being able to enable Microsoft Power
Point Viewer 2003 even using the setup file. Do you have any idea of why this
happens? Other program that does not complete successfully during its enable
operation is Microsoft Project 2003. It asks for a file called
OCLNCORE.OPC_1033 but in the Microsoft Office 2003 setup CD-ROM there is only
a file called OCLNCORE.OPC under the directory
\PROJECT\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11. Can you give some more hints on how
to bypass this issue?

And as a last question... what operation would you do to verify if Local
Installation Files of the installed Microsoft Offices are really working
properly so that I do not have to use Microsoft Installer Clean Up as it
seems to me that I will have a lot of headaches if I use it...

Thank you very much for all your support.

Yes, you need to reinstall Office after using the utility. The Repair
functionality will not work since there will no longer be installation
information (your installation source) available for repairing the
installation.

Regarding your second (and third) question, I'm not entirely sure what you
are asking. If you moved MSOCache and your Office installation is no longer
recognizing the location then it will not work in general. A way to verify
this is to use Add/Remove Programs and try to modify your Office
installation. If you don't encounter an error then your Office installation,
and MSOCache (if you elected to create it) is working properly.

Hi Beth,

Please advise what other programs are available for moving office 2003. I
have the same situation however it appears that the MSOcache folder is
missing from the old partition. Could you provide some assistance on how to
move office to new partition without reinstallation. I have two partition
one for windows os and the other for programs. These partition were created
using the windows resource cd provided by comp. manufacturer. As such, the
old partition only has the windows os files and the new partition has all the
old programs from the original setup.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
EMoorhead
