How to make Word accept file names with international characters?

How I do I make Office Word accept file names with international characters?
I have already enabled Spanish in Office language tools and installed the
alternate keyboard, but whenever I try to save a file with with one of the
diacritical marks in the title (e. g. español) Word tells me that the name is
invalid. Also a program on a CD that comes with my textbook (I am a Spanish
teacher) will not install properly. The title of the program has a
diacritical mark in it. The program seems to install from the CD, but then
Windows cannot find it; it is listed in programs, but the folder is marked
empty.
