How to modify a template with userforms and save it with a new name?

Hi,

I have made a template containing several userforms and short-cut
keys. Then, I change the content of the template, say all the "John"s
to be "Peter"s, and try to save the template under a new name.
However, the newly saved template doesn't contain the previous
userforms and
short-cut keys. May I ask how to make the newly saved template
contain such previous userforms and short-cut keys? Thanks.

Did you modify the template or a document created from the template?

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the reply.

I did it this way:

I go to C:\Documents and Settings\hclee\Application Data\Microsoft
\Templates, click on the template, say test1.dot, modify its content
by changing "Johns" to "Peters" and adding some text, and then save it
as test2.dot in the same directory. After that, I find that the
previous userforms and shortkeys don't exist in test2.dot.

There's some missing information here, but I think I can guess what happened.
When you say you "click on the template", do you mean that you double-clicked it
and it opened in Word? If so, what you got then and modified was a document
based on the template, not the template itself. Therefore, the macros and
shortcuts weren't in there.

There is a difference between double-clicking a document and double-clicking a
template. The default action (which you can see as the bolded command in the
right-click menu in Windows Explorer) is "Open" for a document but it's "New"
for a template.

Instead of double-clicking the test1.dot template, right-click it and choose the
Open command. Then you'll get test1.dot itself opened in Word, and saving a
modified copy to a different name _will_ include the macros and shortcuts.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your help.

Yes, by "clicking on the template", I meant double-clicking the file
named test1.dot.
Your message that I should right-click on the file and select "open"
to open the test1.dot file
solved my problem. Thanks again.
