How to move Entourage X data to Entour. 2008 (in OS 10.6.3)

D

I have searched for a week an only find old scripts not applicable to Snow
Leopard (Paul Berkowitz, Jolly roger, Brian Wainright). I can get none of
these to work. MAybe I missed something.

My initial data move with Entourage 2008 set up failed to move any Entourage
X data into 2008. I was able to move my contacts into 2008 ( I forget now
how I did that last week). For the last week plus I have been trying off and
on to move my old mail into MSO Entourage 2008. With Brian Wainrights'
script I was able to get my email into a folder on my Desk Top 'Mail Folders'
(MBOX). Though that script is supposed to maintain all messages in their
individual hierarchical folders, I cannot see any folders in the MBOX 'Mail
Folder'. I have been unable to drag/drop that MBOX folder into Entour. 2008.

I sure hope I am not forced to use Entour. X for email or via Comcast web
site.

Any help would be extremely appreciated.
(my head has bloodied the brick wall pretty well by now :eek:/ )

Thanks, Dave

PS. I tried importing mail into Apple Mail as a path to Ent.2008. I read a
few palces that was an easy path. Hmmmmmmn... It 'appeared' that only
individual emails came over. No folders, no hierarchy. Again, I may be
missing something.

Thanks, Dave

My initial data move with Entourage 2008 set up failed to move any Entourage
X data into 2008.

I don't know why Entourage 2008 is not consistent in importing Entourage
X Identities, but I keep Office 2004 installed to import client
Identities when it fails. If you have a friend that has Entourage 2004
you could get them to do this for you.

Since your Identity failed to import you can only resort to opening the
Entourage X Identity and exporting all data for import into Entourage 2008.

This script should work to export your messages. Export folders as MBOX
files (includes subfolders)
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/jolly/Make_MBOX.zip>
Barry's script does not get subfolders in an organized way. Paul
Berkowitz's scripts don't work in Snow Leopard.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to
move to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

I do suggest that once you get your data into Entourage 2008 that you
test by exporting all as .rge and as MBOX files to verify that the
import was truly successful.

Hope this helps!

Diane,
Thank you very much for responding to my question. Boy, this Entourage world
must be small. In my research, you were the only live (interactive ;o)
source I ran across about my issue. Your reply to others sent me in Jolly,
Brian and Paul's directions.

Thanks again. I will get on to trying your suggestions.

Diane,
I was poking around in the dark as I am not familiar with scripts and their
running. I clicked on your link, 'Archive_Message_Folders' shows up (only)
in Downloads, not on Desktop. I double click the script there. It opens in
'Apple Script Editor. NOw I do not know the next step. Barry had me put his
script in 'Entourage Script Menu Items' folder, then open Entourage X (I
think). HOw should I proceed with L+Jolly Rogers script?

Thanks, Dave

Hope I did not gum it up. Here's what I just did...
- Clicked green 'Run' circle in Archive_Message_Folders' window.
Unfortunately, I did not realize that Ent. 2008 was open, not Ent. X, crud.
I got an error message saying something like: "Cannot complete. There is
already something there with that name."
- I closed ENt. '08, then opened Ent. X. Then I clicked green 'Run' circle
again. Error message: "FInder got an error. The operation can't be
completed because there is already an item with that name."

Oh, I see a folder on the Desktop "Entourage Archives". I put it in trash
and hit 'Run' again. (with Ent. X open. I got AppleScript Error: [Can't
make "iMac HD:Users:Dave:Desktop:EntourageArchives.mbox" into type file
specification.]

Hi Diane,
Great info. I read the link as well as several of your subsequent articles.
They are very informative and easy to understand. I now am familiar with
downloading scripts, moving them into the scripts folder and running them.
I have also read Entourage '08 Help. I have been unsuccessful in importing
the MBOX file(s) into Entourage 2008.

I cleaned out my email by deleting 100+ folders (thousands of emails)

I ran the script you linked (JollyRoger) many times to try to get to:
1) Get the # of Items, which I assumed to mean # of folders, to match my
actual # of folders.
a. After several runs, the script's results finally were consistent at
259 Items, 501,861,023 bytes. (note: prior to each new script run, I
added an identifying suffix [-1 etc.] to the previous 'Entourage Archives'
folder, and moved it into the trash folder)
b. My actual # of folders is 330. I thought maybe it did not
count empty (21) or maybe 'single message' folders (26), but 259 + 21 + 26
= 306 actual folders, not my counted 330.

IMPORTING attempts
1) o2m LittleMachines' said drag to folders area. I don't know what that
means, so I tried dragging the 'Entourage Archives' folder to a.) 'On My
Computer folder, b.) over other folders area,
c.) over blank area below 'Mail VIews' folder. All did not work.
2) Using File > Import > Msgs from a text file > Import msgs from an MBOX-
format txt file > select and OK individual mbox files in Ent. Archive folder.
program immediately said import complete, click finish. Then I checked
the new folder created in Ent. '08 only to find 4 very old messages (listed
under heading 'older'). One MBOX file import attempt got 4 msgs under
'older' and 4 msgs under 'this year'.

Am I doing something wrong?

I very much appreciate the depth of knowledge that you share as well as your
time to the tech (and not so tech...me) community in these blogs.

Diane,

I also just tried to 'Force Update' Ent. 2008, which did not work.
First I copied the 'Main Identity-Dave' from 'Office X Identities'
folder ,
Then I pasted it into the 'Office 2008 Identities' folder.
Then a copying data window showed the progress until complete.
Then I was supposed to 'open' Ent. 2008, which was already open (oops?). I
closed and reopend Ent. 2008. No data shoeing in Ent. 2008.
In the 'Office 2008 Identities' folder there are now two Identity folders:
Main Identity (24.7 mb)
Main Identity-Dave (2.3 GB)

The instructions said this was supposed to 'overwrite' '08's 'Main Identity'.
This did not appear to happen. I don't know if 'switching' Identities from
my copied over -Dave Identity is an option. I'll wait to hear back from you
before groping any further in the dark by switching Identities.

Thanks again for pointing me in learning directions.)

This is all getting very confusing to follow. I'll try explain what I
would have done.

When I use the export script, I have 3 windows open to view. 1)
Entourage 2) A Finder window with the Entourage Archives folder showing
so I can view the folders being created and 3) the Activity Monitor.

When the script is running the Microsoft Database daemon is active. When
the scripts gets to 0.0 CPU it's quit.

If the script does not quit and the very last folder in your list is
showing in the Finder, then all folders were exported. If the folder is
not the last folder, then you have to start with it and work manually to
find the corruption in that folder.

When you try force update, there should only be the Identity you are
wanting to force. Did you try Switch Identity to see if the Dave
Identity would open?

I still think your best bet is to get someone with a 2004 copy to do the
import for you. You have a LOT of folders and dragging or importing that
many folder will take an enormous amount of time and it's not clear they
contain all the data.

D

davekro via MacKB.com

1) Re-ran script with your 3 windows open. All folders exported. CPU%
dropped to bumping around 1% - 2% and Script Icon was no longer highlighted
by blue square, so script was done.
I have gotten full exports many times. When I try to use File > Import
etc, only a few folders show up as mentioned before. So I take it this
method is a dead end.

2) Entourage 2008 would not let me switch Identity to my -Dave Identity in
the same folder.
Dead end.

3) OK, I will seek to line up the Entourage 2004 angle.
What would I need to do?
a) Do I want to get a friend to email me or send me a disc with MS
Office 2004, then work with it on my iMac?
b) Do they need to do something on their Mac that would help me? Do I
need to take my iMac to a friend's house (who has MSO 2004)?

I do appreciate your patience, as I know it may be getting, well, less
abundant. ;o)

Regards,
Dave
PS. When I get this danged thing figured out, I'd be very glad to PayPal you
some appreciation. If Berkowitz's script would have applied, I'd have gladly
paid $20 bucks.

On a side note...
Many of the completed 'exports' were different sizes (with no change to the
msgs or folders).
495.7 MB (259 items)
492.0 MB (257 items)
502.5 MB (259 items) Three separate 'exports' were exactly this same (to the
byte!)
495.7 MB (259 items) The last 'export' while watching Activity Monitor.

Is there an easy answer as to why results would vary? No worries if not. I
figured I'd use the 502.5 MB 'export' it's the biggest and happened three
times in a row.

Any thoughts on if size matters? I certainly don't care if I lose a few
messages from many thousands.

a) Do I want to get a friend to email me or send me a disc with MS
Office 2004, then work with it on my iMac?

This is not technically legal. For a one time use it's a lot of trouble
to install and update when using his install is much simpler and legal.
b) Do they need to do something on their Mac that would help me? Do I
need to take my iMac to a friend's house (who has MSO 2004)?

I would simply take your Identity to your friend's house. Place it in a
folder named Office X Identities in his Microsoft User Data folder. Then
create a new Identity in Office 2004 and select to import from an older
version. If you have problems finding someone to help you, you can
contact me off list.

Other than something burping while this was happening the folders should
have been the same.

Diane,

SUCCESS ! !)
Importing into Entourage 2004 then into Ent. '08 from there worked like a
charm. I didn't try this route earlier because my friend lives one hour away.
But after all the attempts, I was HAPPY to make the drive )

Thank you very much for your knowledge and especially your patience. I would
be glad to send $10- $20 of PayPal appreciation if you send me a link to use.
