How to move projects 2003 server on a different machine? (repost)

Cris

As my previous thread died out without answers I am reposting, appologies if
annoying..

I have project on a 2k3 server that will be shortly decomissioned (trial
expires); I need to move it on another machine that has sharepoint services
installed and has SQL server as well.
I tried to find some whitepaper or guidelines for this migration but failed.

Any pointers? links? advice?

Project is on a stand alone server.
It has the web interface via SharePoint Services.
Project Server database is on SQL 2000 Server local installation.

I have a couple of options for the move but basicaly it will be another SQL
server.
The web interface I can put on the same with the SQL server or on a machine
with SharePoint Server (rather then Services) installed.
Either way should be fine from my point of view but I understand there is
more work to set it on SharePoint Server.

Thanks

Cris

Hi Chris,

We have just been through the same thing. There is no white paper to
transfer 2003 sharepoint as yet. Not that we have found. There is one
however for the previous version of Sharepoint. It's exactly the same but
for the most part it gets you through it.

You have to transfer the database first before installing either WSS or
Project.

If you are giving the new server a different name you have to make some
changes in the database tables. Unfortunatly you have to go through every
table to make sure that you have got everything amended. A bit time
consuming but it does work.

Then just install Project & WSS as you did originally. All security and AD
details are transferred.

We are still having a couple of hiccups when trying to get the virtual sites
for each project. Another half helpful guide is the disaster recovery
document. It at least explains the install of WSS & Project.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi chris,

As I said I'll post when we get Project Server all working again.

We found that after we migrated all of the data and changed the details of
the site names in the SQL tables, we still had a problem with creating
project sites (to view issues, risks and documents.

The solution was to go to the Admin in Project Server, click on Manage
Windows Sharepoint Services and select Site provisioning settings.

Although we already had an account in the owner section (with email) and it
was in the Domain admins group. We also have had to add in the secondary
owner we put in our network managers account details (of which he is already
in the domain admins group). This fixed the problem.

Not sure why but we are pleased :)

I am challenged with a similar situation. I find Gillian's response lacking
in details. Gillian references the SMigrat.exe tool for migrating Sharepoint
Team Services data to WSS, however the question also mentioned Project
Server data as well. Is Gillian suggesting that one use the PSMigrat.exe tool
to migrate Project Server 2003 data, and the related Windows Sharepoint
Services data to an unlike named server? Have you made any progress in your
migration efforts?
