How to not expand message threads in newsgroups?

When I click the + next to a thread to open it, it automatically opens all
the sub threads and sub sub threads as well...but I don't want that!!

eg: In a particular ng there is a once-a-week posting that requires
interested parties to respond to the initial header. Others can then reply
to that response and/or create their own sub thread and so on. (I hope this
is clear! ;-)

What I want is to be able to select the particular thread/sub thread that I
want to open..not to have them all there already open.
I can't seem to find the setting anywhere.
Can anybody throw any light on this for me please? Apologies if this is not
the right place to ask, but thanks for your time anyway.
