how to number cells (1,2,3...) w/o having to manually type them al

am making a form for signing up items. Need to number column cells (1, 2,
3...) without having to do it manually. Is there a function that will do it
for me?

One way...

Assuming you want column A to number as you enter data in column B.

Enter this formula in A2 and copy down far enough to account for future data
addition in column B.

=IF(B2="","",COUNTA(B$2:B2))

In your first cell, say A1, enter 1.
In your second, say A2, enter =a1+1
Now drag this formula down your column as far as you want to go.
