How to only merge fields with data?

When I go to edit individual files, sometimes the mail merge creates a whole
bunch of extra merges at the end but because the data file only had x amount
of rows of data, the extra merges are blank. How can I make sure that only
the fields with data end up in the final merge files?

What is the data source? I guess it is probably Excel and you may have some
spaces in some of the cells below the data. Select all of the rows below
the data (I mean all) and press delete to delete whatever it is that might
be in any of the cells.

Yes, it did work. Out of curiosity, how could there have been data in those
cells?

It could have been just a space in one of them.
