how to open attachement when error says "application not found?"

When I try to open an attachment, such as a JPG file, I recieve an error
message which simply reads: Application not found. I am able to save the
attached file and open it, but am no longer able to open it on the spot. What
application should there be in order for me to open these attachments again?
