how to plot top-down charts

I was wondering how I can place two charts above-below each other with
the same X-axis (i.e. dates), such as having stock price charts above
the volume charts below with corresponding dates.

The hardest part of this is lining up the X axes of the two charts. You
can format the charts independently so they almost fit together. You
have to make the chart area of at least the top chart, if not both,
transparent (i.e., no fill). You can fairly precisely align the top of
one chart to the bottom of the other if you select a chart with the
Shift key pressed (you get white handles, not black ones) and use the
arrow keys.

To line up the X axis scales of the two charts, try this addin:
