how to prevent drawing canvas from appearing?

Hi im trying to do a diagram using word and everytime I add something new,
the gigantic drawing canvas appears and knocks everything out of sinc. It's
really frustrating me now, so I would be really appreciative of any help that
you can give me. I know there's a way to prevent it from appearing, but I
have long since forgotton.

Tools | Options | General: Clear the check box referring to the drawing
canvas.
