How to prevent png from converting to jpg saving as filtered html

I have screen captures that are saved as PNG files inserted in a word
document that I maintain as an HTML file. When I save the document as
filtered HTML, the PNG files get converted to JPG, losing their precision.
(Small PNG files do not get converted.) How can I prevent this converstion
when saving as filtered HTML?
