how to print names on a preprinted certificate

how can I set up a office program to print names on preprinted cetificates
with out haveing to guess by printing examples on plain paper.

Try a good OCR (Optical Character Recognition) programme such as Omnipage.

Otherwise, copying manually is good practice at using Word's capabilities. I
created a standard Law Court Writ Application, including Her Majesty's coat
of arms, and use it very successfully to frighten bad debtors.

I did this once for an acquaintance. It is not an easy thing to do. You end
up printing a lot of test copies until you get the text in the right place.
My suggestion is to fill them out by hand - and take your time. This is one
time when neat penmanship will mean a lot to someone.
