How to protect only certain parts of a word template?

I want to protect certain parts in the body of a word template whereas other
parts should be changeable. The Microsoft help tells me to select the
controls or group of controls that I want to protect. What do they mean with
that? There aren't any "controls" in my doc, just text. What to do?

Assuming that you are using Word 2007, you can do the following: First
display the Developer tab (if it isn't already showing) by clicking Office
button | Word Options, Popular category: "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon."

Then, on the Developer tab, click Protect Document, and click Restrict
Formatting and Editing. Click to select "Allow only this type of editing in
the document" and then choose "No changes (Read only)" in the list.

For each portion of the document that should be editable, select it, and
click a user or group of users under "Exceptions (optional)."

When you are done, click the Yes, Start Enforcing Protection button. Specify
a password if you want to.

Note that restricted documents aren't very safe; the restrictions can be
easily bypassed (for example, via Inser tab | Object | Text from File).

Hi there,
Sorry if I double-posted, I just signed up as a member and may have made a
newbie mistake.

I have a related question, so rather than start a new topic I thought I'd
add it here.

I've created a template in Word 2007 and have restricted some parts of my
document, and limited some of the formatting to a selection of styles.

The template is a report, and rather than having individuals type in their
individual subjects on the subject line I added, I decided to insert a
"Title" field so the title from the document properties would automatically
update here, and in my document footers. I am doing this also to draw
awareness to the document properties metadata, since most users are not aware
of the hidden document information living there.

Anyway, for some reason I can't seem to save changes to the title field in
the document properties "Title" field. I've got some boiler plate text saved
there which is intended to instruct people to "Go to: >Properties. Overwrite
Title field with your report subject title.", which appears on the subject
line in my document. But I can't overwrite it. I thought it was smart idea,
but its not-so-smart if it doesn't work and you can't actually update the
document title if there's any restrictions on a document.

I've tried both restricting and unrestricting the subject line in my report,
in case that impacted the field's ability to update. It didn't work.

I tried searching online for similar issues but I wasn't successful.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,
Wordified
