How to put a BIG capital letter at top of each group in a report

I'm making a name, address, phone columnar report (phone directory, 3 columns
wide) and I want to have the folks' with last names starting with A to start
with --A-- just above the start of their names, and then the B people start
with --B-- just above the first B person and so on. Like:
-- A --
Andrew, Bob
123 Main

etc.

I got the whole report to work except this idea of a big heading at the top
of each new lettered group. Any idea on how to do this? I don't want to
start a new page with each lettered group.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Use the Left expression to extract the first letter of the last name in the
query you use as Record Source of the Report, then use the Report's Sorting
and Grouping properties to group on that calculated Field, put nothing but
the single letter in the Group Header, and there you are!
