How to re-install Office 2000 on a new replacement PC

I initially installed my shrink-wrapped Office 2000
Professional on a desktop PC and on a backup desktop PC,
both in my home office. The backup machine crashed long
ago and was never restored to service. The primary
desktop machine is now being replaced by a new Dell
desktop.

How do I reassign my product registration from the old
desktop to the new Dell?

By installing it on more than one desktop system you were in violation of
the EULA. You may install a single Office licence on one desktop and one
laptop - providing they are not in simultaneous use.

Although its not legal---just insert the first CD and follow the prompts

The fact that there is so much piracy around merely reflects the unending
greediness of Microsoft. Woody Leonhard mentioned recently that in Thailand
where he lives you can buy office 2003 for $3 and buy a new computer with it
installed for $75( ie the price for 0ffice)
Similarly--here in Australia --a newly arrived migrant can enroll in a
Tafe( tertiry ) college and immediately buy MS Products at the Academic
price, whereas age pensioners like me who have paid full prices for MS
products for the past 10 years get NO concessions what ever and the
temptation for bending the rules is ever present

Woody also said that he resisted the temptation to purchase a pirate copy, and paid the price....

Since your back-up machine will not be used again, you could install on your new one, follow the prompts and register by phone. Explain your situation to the rep to get an activation key code.

I didn't think office 2000 NEEDED activation.....

Not true. Later editions (with SP-1 already included) required activation.
