thought I had saved it. I left and came back and everything was gone

Hi Robin;

An unsaved document cannot be "recovered" because there is nothing to
recover. It's a bit like the pin number you make up for your bank card which
only you know... If you forget it & don't have it written down somewhere
you're just out of luck - except whereas the people at the bank can let you
create a new one, the computer will let you create a new document.

As for the possibly saved file you can't find: Both Mac OS & Windows offer
search features which enable you to find files based on name, content,
creation date, etc. How to go about using them on your system I can't say
because you didn't bother to mention what type of system it is or even what
version of Word you're using. However, most any version has a Most Recently
Used Files list, so if you did save the document it should be in the list.

IF the poster hasn't emptied the Trash at least on 2004 (and maybe with
2008 haven't tried enough). If for some reason word quits without your
intervention the document previous to a certain setting will show up in
the Trash it will have something off the wall as title such as tmp253689
or will be in a folder inside the trash with such a name. you just drag
the newest version either to desktop o in finder somewhere and choose
Word to open. all your work previous to the crash should be their. You
may have to copy the contents except last Paragraph mark and paste in
new document, to make sure everything is okay.

If nothing is there then you have to start over.
