How to recover vanish words in microsoft word?

I had saved the file to a memory stick so I could upload the file onto my
desktop PC so I could print it off, but when I tried to open the file, all
that appeared were squares. Now when I try to open the file on my laptop,
where I created the file, all the words have vanished. I cannot make the
words reappear and it took me a while to type up the document so I would not
like to do it all over again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go back to the computer where you first worked on your document, and
copy it to your flash drive again.

What? You didn't save it to the hard drive, but directly to the flash
drive? Then your document is probably gone forever.
