How to remove a check box from a cell in excel spread sheet

I copied from a web page contents to excel spread sheet
(Office XP). One column had 'check box'which I wanted
delete or modify the format etc. It just would not change
or go away. Can any one help how I can remove the check
box from the cell or column of cells ? Thanks!

The checkbox may actually just be a font representation of a check rather
than an actual checkbox control.

Right click on the column and change the font format to something normal.

However this is just a guess.
